Early to Bed & Early to Rise: try to have 7-8 hrs of sleep every night. Eat dinner preferably 2-3 hrs before going to bed. Be slow but consistent with these changes. Regularity is the key to a healthy body.

Water Intake

Drink two full glasses of warm water after waking up. Increase your daily intake of water and try to drink 2 liters (0.5 gallons) during the day. Use filtered water or bottled water. Use a tongue cleaner to scrape your tongue everyday in the morning, after brushing teeth. Stay warm and avoid: cold weather, cold shower, and rain.

Yoga Pranayama

Practice 2-6 rounds of Surya Namaskar (Sun salutations) every day along with 10 min of Kapalbhati pranayama. Practice Vajrasana for 10 min after meals. Other useful poses for you are: Bhujangasana, Shavasana, Vajrasana, and Halasana. Practice Yoga-Nidra (30 min. self hypnosis audio program) 2-4 times a week. It relaxes the body and mind. Massage warm Sesame oil to painful joints at night.

Avoid

Sour foods and fruits, ice cold foods or drinks, soda, tobacco, alcohol, fried foods, fermented foods (white bread), rice, yogurt, fish, red meat, egg yolk, salad, and airy foods (chips and wafers).

Prefer

Whole wheat (naan/tortilla or cereal/pasta), egg white, occasional white meat, paneer/ mozzarella cheese, ghee (clarified butter), nuts (almonds and pistachios).

Beverages

Take Ginger tea (Zingiber officinale) 2-3 times a day. Steep 1 tea bag (green or black tea) in hot water and put a 1/2 (half) inch piece of fresh ginger (crushed or grated), add sugar and creamer (2% organic milk or half-and-half) to taste, and drink it warm. Soak ¼ tsp of Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum) seeds powder in a cup of water every night and drink the water in the morning.

Herbal Supplement

Our herbal supplement formula has following herbs: Feniculum vulgare, Glycerhiza glabra, Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Ricinus communis, Cyperus rotundus, Plantago ovata, Withamnia somnifera, Tinospora cordifolia, Rubia cordifolia, Commiphora mukul, and Shilajit. Stir 1 tsp of the supplement in a cup of water with 1 tsp local honey and take orally twice a day, after food (breakfast and dinner).

Further Management

These herbal supplements do not have any known adverse effects in the dose recommended. They also do not have any known interaction with any prescription medication. Herbal supplements take 2-6 months to show their effect and are typically continued for 1-2 yrs for chronic illnesses. Thereafter, the recommended lifestyle changes and yoga-pranayama should be followed consistently. When you start feeling better consult with your Rheumatologist to slowly taper steroids and other anti-inflammatory medications.
