Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease




Early To Bed & Early To Rise: try to have 8 hrs of sleep during the night. Go to bed between 9:30-10:00 pm and wake up between 5:30-6:00 am. Eat dinner 2-3 hrs before going to bed.

Water Intake

Drink two full glasses of water (at room temperature) after waking up. Try to have complete bowel
evacuation every morning. Increase your daily intake of water (without ice) and try to drink 2 liters (0.5
gallons) during the day. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat, especially during summer months.

Yoga and Pranayama

Practice 2-4 rounds of Surya Namaskar (Sun salutation) in the morning and 10 min of Kapalbhati Pranayama. Join a Yoga class and research them online. Other useful poses for you are:Bhujangasana, Shavasana, Vajrasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, and Yoga Nidra. Practice Vajrasana for 10 min after meals. Slow relaxed walking is very good, especially after meals.


Red meat, alcohol, sour foods and fruits, egg yolk, fried foods, coffee, fermented foods (bread),chili and pepper, vinegar products, yogurt, processed and canned food, sour salty and pungent tasting foods, and tobacco products.


Whole wheat pasta or tortilla, couscous, mung beans, rice, cooked or baked vegetables, sweet astringent and bitter tasting foods, mozzarella cheese (avoid dairy products during a flare up), mild green or black tea, Use filtered water or bottled water.

Herbal Supplement

It contains ten different herbs: Foeniculum vulgare, Cyperus rotundus, Glycerhiza glabra, Aegle marmelos, Emblica officinalis, Tinospora cordifolia, Messua ferrua, Plantago ovata, Withamnia somnifera, and Aloe Vera. One tsp of this herbal supplement powder is stirred in a cup of water, along with 1 tsp local honey, and taken orally twice a day, after breakfast and dinner.

Further Management

These herbal supplements do not have any known adverse effects in the dose recommended. They also do not have any known interaction with any prescription medication. Herbal supplements take 2-6 months to show their effect and are typically continued for 1-2 yrs for chronic illnesses. Thereafter, the recommended lifestyle changes and yoga-pranayama should be followed consistently. When you start feeling better consult with your Gastroenterologist to slowly taper steroids and other anti-inflammatory medications. If you have iron deficiency anemia, talk to your doctor about venofer-iron-sucrose injection. Avoid oral iron or multivitamin supplements.
